About Us

The South Florida Breast Cancer Coalition was originally founded in 1993 by 3 local women as a nonprofit, grassroots organization dedicated to ending breast cancer through advocacy, education, and research. In 2002 with the introduction of the specialty END BREAST CANCER license plate, a second organization was founded, the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation (FBCF).

Since that time, we have become best known for our instrumental role in the passage of the Mary Brogan Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Act and for the establishment of the 'End Breast Cancer' license plate, which funds research and education throughout the State of Florida.

Florida Breast Cancer Foundation is funded largely through grassroots donations and from the funds from the 'End Breast Cancer' license plate, and has enabled us to stay true to our mission: to end breast cancer through advocacy, education, and research. All monies raised stay in the State of Florida to support advocacy, education, and research programs for Florida residents and institutions.

Our purpose is to raise awareness and mobilize Floridians to:

- Ensure sufficient government and public funding for breast cancer research
- Ensure quality health care for all without fear of discrimination and ensure an environment free of carcinogens

We have statewide advocates who have lobbied locally and on a national level since our inception. They work hard to promote increased and sustainable funding to further our mission. They also rally throughout the State of Florida to ensure no harmful laws are passed. Florida Breast Cancer Foundation is a statewide organization with a local presence in Miami Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Orlando, Jacksonville, and Tampa. Our e-alert system accesses close to 6,500 people and growing.

In 2010, we extended our statewide reach in both Educational and Scientific Grants. FBCF launched a new scientific and research program initiative for 2009/2010. It is called the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation Fellowship Program. The goal for this important program is to provide funding for fulltime research fellows in breast cancer at major Florida research institutions. A key program component is coordination of fellowship research activities among the institutions and a proposed annual symposium. In fund year 2010, we funded 4 additional fellowships for a total of $400,000.00.

FBCF welcomes all who are committed to ending the breast cancer epidemic. We have made great strides, but much more needs to be done, especially in Florida. With this additional funding, the dream will become reality and keep us on the path for projected growth.
