2006 Education Grant Awards, Total Awarded - $10,500.00 MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando MD Anderson’s proposal seeks to empower African American women in the central Florida area to take an active role in their breast health by educating them on the advisability and availability of clinical trials. Through a collaborative effort with community groups, MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando proposes to address the misinformation and lack of information often present in many African American communities regarding treatment choices for breast care. The overall goal for this project is to dispel myths, change attitudes and increase the consideration and utilization of clinical trials by African American women in their breast health treatment plans. The project will utilize trusted community members in delivering an accurate depiction of the clinical trial process thereby addressing an educational need for women with cultural barriers in underserved areas. The project will outreach to African American women through black churches, beauty parlors and through local community agencies in black neighborhoods. Between 5,000 and 10,000 women will be served. Funding will be used to help MD Anderson produce educational materials on clinical trials specifically geared toward the African American community and ensure that the material is widely distributed.
