Think Pink all year round; 365 Days of Awareness!

October Breast Cancer Awareness month is over, but the fight continues all year round 365 days a year for the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation. The busiest time of the year for the foundation is not the holiday season, it is October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Though Breast Cancer deserves attention throughout year, October turns pink in honor of breast cancer fighters and survivors. It is the season for events, walks, and fundraisers as a way of supporting and honoring the fight to end Breast Cancer.

This October, the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation, celebrated its 8th Anniversary "Power of Pink" Breakfast and 6th Anniversary "Shades of Pink" Masquerade Ball. The "Power of Pink" Breakfast kicked off breast cancer awareness month on September 25th at Nordstrom Aventura Café Bistro. Guests enjoyed a breakfast buffet at the bistro and participated in raffle drawings where many won prizes from gift cards to merchandise-all donated by Aventura Mall retailers. Also, VIP shopping and makeovers were held at Nordstrom until noon immediately after the breakfast. The 6th Anniversary "Shades of Pink" Masquerade Ball fundraising event was held on October 25 at the Trump International Beach Resort. The theme of "unmasking" supported the foundation mission to fund research in the State of Florida that will help "unmask" new treatments and find a cure.

In between the two main events, there were plenty of events for the statewide community to participate in and show their support to help raise funds to fulfill FBCF's mission such as the breast cancer education day at local Winn Dixie's to the Pilates in the Grove event. Thanks to all who got involved and made these events possible and so successful. This October was a success and took all of us one step closer to finding a cure. For more information on how you can make a difference, visit www.FloridaBreastCancer.org.

This season may be over but the fight continues! Visit the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation Facebook page to see the event photos and LIKE the page!

Susan Moreno

In Loving Memory

Susan Moreno

4/21/48 - 9/15/11

With the deepest sympathy the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation shares the recent loss of Susan Moreno, longtime advocate and supporter. In 1997 Susan joined what was known at that time the Florida Breast Cancer Coalition as a breast cancer survivor. From the very beginning she was a very dedicated advocate in the pursuit of our legislative agenda, as well as in other areas of the organization. Throughout the years she held several positions including Legislative Chair, Member of the Board of Directors and Member of the Scientific Committee.

Her work would always be appreciated and remembered. May she rest in peace.

National Breast & Cervical Cancer Earlyl Detection Program

The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (BEE-CEP) is a partnership between Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state departments of health. BEE-CEP awards grants to local providers and clinics to provide breast and cervical cancer screening, diagnostic care and case management for low-income, uninsured, and medically underserved women who do not qualify for Medicaid. Over the past two decades, BEE-CEP has served 3.7 million women, provided more than 9.2 million breast and cervical cancer screenings, and diagnosed almost 45,000 breast cancers. Women who are screened and diagnosed through the BEE-CEP program can gain temporary access to Medicaid for their cancer treatment.

Under the terms of the program, a woman must be diagnosed in the BEE-CEP program in order to receive complete treatment. This limitation results in a major underlying issue in the state of Florida. We are unintentionally losing women everyday by the actions of thoughtful but unaware foundations who think they are helping women by providing free mammograms, when in actuality they are depriving them of the financial assistance they so desperately need. Any person or foundation that pays for or provides a free mammogram to a woman between the ages of 50 and 64 who is uninsured or cannot otherwise afford the mammogram inadvertently eliminates that woman's ability to access funds for diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer through BEE-CEP.

It is our responsibility as advocates to educate these foundations and the women they serve about BEE-CEP, which was established to provide diagnosis and treatment for women who are unable to afford a mammogram. If a screening mammogram is performed outside of BEE-CEP and an abnormality is found and further diagnostic testing and/or treatment are required, the woman will not be able to access any funding from BEE-CEP to cover that diagnostic testing and is therefore denied financial assistance for treatment if any cancer is found. The woman MUST be screened and diagnosed through BEE-CEP in order to receive complete treatment.

Please help us educate Florida foundations and hospitals about BEE-CEP so that we can prevent any more women from falling through the cracks. For more information please contact your local Department of Health and/or visit the Central of Disease Control and Prevention website.
