A New Way to Show Support During Breast Cancer Awareness Month
South Florida based Pickups for Breast Cancer launches a new group donation pick-up program aimed at companies, apartment buildings and other organizations.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it’s right around the corner. It’s a great time to spread awareness about the disease and to donate to breast cancer foundations that help fund research for a cure. What some people don’t know is that donations don’t always have to be monetary, which is great news for those who want to help but are on a tight budget in this economy.
Pickups for Breast Cancer is a South Florida-based program that accepts donations of clothing, furniture and household items. The organization will come to you to pick up the items so you don’t even have to leave the house. New this year, a pick-up service designed to get entire groups of people involved in the donation process.
It works like this: Schedule a pick-up date for your office, home, apartment complex or school with Pickups for Breast Cancer. Then ask your friends, family, co-workers or neighbors to drop off their lovingly used items at the designated location. Pickups for Breast Cancer will then come and collect them! Mike Arena of the FBCF Donation Pickups Program suggests collecting bags of clothing and shoes because they are the easiest to transport and bring the foundation great value.
Asking those around you to donate helps spread awareness for breast cancer. “Group pickups get the masses talking about this important topic. It may encourage one person to go get properly screened who might not have otherwise,” says Arena. On top of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and group pick-ups raising awareness and fostering action from the community, it also helps fund breast cancer research and ensures access to care. Arena states that although more research is obviously still needed, the money raised by breast cancer foundations has made a huge impact.
October is the beginning of the group pick-ups program, but it certainly isn’t the end. Group pick-ups will continue to be offered from here on out. “...the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation is using Breast Cancer Awareness Month to kick off our group pickup program. Our goal is to have many advocates pushing for their organizations to support this cause all year long,” Arena says.

Donations are sold at local thrift stores and proceeds go to the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation to help fund efforts toward breast cancer advocacy, education and research.
