NBCC Leadership Summit and Lobby Day 2017

June 30, 2017

This year, the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation (FBCF), along with other breast cancer advocates throughout the country, had the opportunity to attend the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s (NBCC) annual Advocate Leadership Summit and Lobby Day in Washington, D.C. Seven enthusiastic advocates represented the state of Florida, and FBCF was delighted to award four of the advocates scholarships from the FBCF Jane Torres Scholarship Fund.

The Advocate Leadership Summit featured the latest research on breast cancer prevention and breast cancer metastasis; plenary sessions concerning NBCC’s Deadline 2020; and training sessions on best practices and approaches to advocacy strategic planning. Advocates had a chance to meet with scientists, innovators, and thought leaders in small group settings, while connecting with other breast cancer advocates from all parts of the country.

FBCF Board Member, Larry Mendlow of Jacksonville, and six other breast cancer advocates flew in from all parts of Florida: Lora McCann (Cape Coral); Alexandria Washington (Tallahassee); and Alysia Pringle (St. Petersburg); NBCC Florida Field Coordinator Ann Fonfa (Palm Beach); and NBCC Florida Team Leaders, Tracy Leduc (Tampa) and Judy Perkins (Port St. Lucie). During Lobby Day, the advocates met with both Florida Senators and 10 Congressmen to discuss the importance of continued funding for breast cancer research and the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program (DoD BCRP). We are proud to have been part of an exciting and unifying four days in Washington, D.C. Only through research will breast cancer defeated, and working with scientists and lawmakers to ensure sufficient funding is allocated is the only way to ensure these research programs continue until we discover how to prevent or cure breast cancer.
