Fellowship Overview:
The Florida Breast Cancer Foundation (FBCF) is committed to building a strong network of informed and effective breast cancer advocates across the state of Florida.
Each year, the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation will select a cohort of 10 Advocacy Fellows representing diverse communities across Florida.
The Florida Breast Cancer Foundation Advocacy Fellowship is a leadership development program designed to support and train breast cancer advocates who are committed to advancing research, education, and policy that improves outcomes for individuals affected by breast cancer.
Through participation in nationally recognized advocacy training programs and conferences, Fellows gain the knowledge and leadership skills needed to strengthen breast cancer advocacy efforts throughout Florida.
Corporate and philanthropic partners have the opportunity to support the development of these advocacy leaders and expand breast cancer education and policy engagement throughout the state.
As part of the program, Fellows may receive a Florida Breast Cancer Foundation Advocacy Fellowship Award of up to $1,500 to support participation in an approved advocacy training program or conference.
FBCF’s founders played a critical role in advancing breast cancer research funding at both the federal and state levels. They believed that with strong advocacy, adequate funding, and cutting-edge research, we can end the breast cancer epidemic.
The Fellowship continues this legacy by preparing the next generation of breast cancer advocates across Florida.
Fellowship Purpose:
The Florida Breast Cancer Foundation Advocacy Fellowship is designed to educate and empower breast cancer advocates in:
- Breast cancer science and research
- Health policy and legislative advocacy
- Community education and outreach
- Effective advocacy strategies
Through this program, the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation invests in individuals committed to strengthening breast cancer advocacy in their communities.
Fellows attend recognized advocacy training programs and return to their communities equipped to translate knowledge into meaningful advocacy action.
The goal of the Fellowship is to build a statewide network of trained advocates who advance breast cancer awareness, research, and policy throughout Florida.
Fellowship Structure:
Fellowship Award
Selected Fellows may receive a Florida Breast Cancer Foundation Advocacy Fellowship Award of up to $1,500 to support participation in an approved advocacy training program or conference. Eligible expenses include:
- Conference registration
- Economy airfare
- Hotel accommodations
- Meals
The amount awarded depends on:
- Number of qualified applicants
- Available funds
- Total cost of the training program
Partial awards may be granted.
Fellowship Commitment
Recipients of the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation Advocacy Fellowship become part of the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation Advocacy Network.
Fellows agree to:
- Serve on the FBCF Advocacy Committee for one year
- Participate in the FBCF Action Alert Network (responding to advocacy alerts and policy initiatives)
- Engage in advocacy activities related to breast cancer policy
- Support advocacy priorities approved by the FBCF Board of Directors
- Share knowledge gained through presentations, webinars, or community education
Fellows represent the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation and help strengthen advocacy efforts statewide.
Eligibility Guidelines
To expand advocacy leadership across Florida:
- Applicants may receive one fellowship award per fiscal year (July – June)
- Individuals who receive a Florida Breast Cancer Foundation Advocacy Fellowship Award must wait one full fiscal year before reapplying for fellowship funding
- Priority will be given to first-time applicants and individuals who have not previously received a Florida Breast Cancer Foundation Advocacy Fellowship Award
- Preference may be given to applicants representing different geographic regions across Florida
Previous recipients are encouraged to remain engaged through the FBCF Advocacy Committee and the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation Advocacy Fellows Network.
FBCF encourages applications from:
- Breast cancer survivors
- Caregivers
- Oncology nurses and healthcare professionals
- Community health workers
- Public health students
- Emerging advocates interested in breast cancer policy and education
* Current Board Members are not eligible.
Application Review Process
Applications will be reviewed by the FBCF Advocacy Committee.
Applicants may be invited to participate in a brief interview with the Advocacy Committee Chair.
Final fellowship awards are approved by the FBCF Board of Directors, which meets 6 times annually. Applicants will be notified of the board’s decision via email following the meeting. Board meeting dates for FY27 will be:

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis from July 1 through May 1, or until funds are exhausted. In order for an application to be included for vote it needs to be received two weeks prior to board meeting date.
Post-Conference Accountability:
Within 30 days of completing the training, Fellows must submit:
- Receipts for reimbursable expenses (up to $1,500)
- Proof of conference attendance (e.g. conference badge, email confirmation of conference attendance upon completion)
- A written report (1–2 pages) describing:
- Sessions attended
- Key takeaways
- How the information will be applied to advocacy efforts
- Knowledge sharing through one of the following:
- Presentation to an FBCF volunteer group
- Participation in an FBCF webinar
- Presentation to a community or advocacy organization
- Photos from the conference that may be used in FBCF communications
Failure to comply with these requirements may result in non-issuance or repayment of fellowship award funds.
Travel Guidelines:
Advocacy Fellow Applicants should follow the travel policy for the organization.
Travel arrangements should be booked directly with airlines and hotels choosing the basic fare and cheapest hotel.
Third-party booking services (such as Expedia) should be avoided.
Applicants should utilize the FBCF tax-exempt certificate when applicable.
Meals are reimbursable and any expenses exceeding the approved amount would be the responsibility of the individual. Alcohol expenses will not be reimbursed.
