When someone is confronted by cancer, you become quickly overwhelmed in trying to deal with your diagnosis, with recommendations for treatment, with family responsibilities and issues, and with financial challenges, and so much more. For fifteen years the Cancer Support Community Greater Miami (CSCGM) has been part of our greater community providing cancer support programs and services, touching the lives of so many people. Unfortunately, they have announced that they will be closing their doors on March 31st.
The Florida Breast Cancer Foundation focuses on only one part of the cancer world, working to end breast cancer through advocacy, education and research. Our education efforts have spanned more than 10 years funding non-profit organizations that have committed to holding education programs in breast health, breast cancer awareness and risks, and survivorship skills among some of the topics that have been covered.
The departure of CSCGM challenges us to expand our education funding so those who otherwise would have benefited from the education opportunities provided by CSCGM will have expanded choices from programs that we will fund through other organizations in the community. Presently we have announced that we will be funding education programs in Florida that address four major priority areas for education. This grant cycle will make available a total of $100,000 for education.
Our communities across Florida are poorer because of the closing of CSCGM and other similar organizations during the past year. The Florida Breast Cancer Foundation will do what we can to expand our funding to provide programs for breast cancer patients and their families.
